Luke Chang - President | Pledged Spring 23

Hello everyone! My name is Luke Chang, and I am the current President of Alpha Phi Omega. This letter gives you a look into what makes our chapter, Eta Alpha, at Santa Clara University, so remarkable.

Alpha Phi Omega is a professional, coeducational service fraternity that centers around the cardinal values of Leadership, Friendship, and Service. These principles are what the individuals in our chapter strive to embody every day as students, as we prepare for life after college.

In Leadership, our chapter coordinates events that help our brothers develop themselves as leaders to the best of their abilities. These events can consist of professional workshops to help members along their career journeys or discover new interests such as sports, different forms of arts, and many other skills that can be taught. Leadership can be defined subjectively according to the individual, and we aim to provide means for our brothers to find their definition.

In Friendship, our chapter organizes events that range from chapter-wide activities to smaller group interactions to initiate more intimate connections between brothers. We aim to create a community where everyone can be unapologetically themselves, offering a safe space for students through both fun activities and meaningful discussions. Eta Alpha prides itself on our ability to create a strong brotherhood that produces life-long relationships within.

In Service, our chapter shares the main fundamental principle with all Alpha Phi Omega chapters, which our fraternity is based around. We categorize our community service events into four divisions. Service to the community, often partnering with external local organizations to give back to the Santa Clara/San Jose Area and those in need. Service to the nation, involving larger social issues that apply nationally and globally. Service to the campus, serving the students and faculty that reside within the Santa Clara University community. As well as service to the chapter, helping one another as brothers of this fraternity. These four categories are all opportunities for us to give back to those around us and appreciate the positions of privilege we are in to do so.

Leadership, Friendship, and Service are all core principles that can lead us throughout our lives no matter where we are. Our organization fosters a community for young individuals to develop themselves into strong, contributing members of society, well beyond just our college careers.

Alpha Phi Omega has shaped me into the person I am today. Looking back now, being a part of this organization has been one of the best decisions I have made toward my future. It has given me a home on campus and an environment to become the best version of myself. If I were to go back in time and tell my quiet, socially anxious self that I was writing this letter, I wouldn’t even be able to fathom it. Alpha Phi Omega has pushed me to exceed my own expectations for myself. All that I have written about in this letter are things we cannot learn in the classroom. This group of people and our shared values have given me experiences that I will forever cherish. Being a part of this fraternity has been such a special privilege for me and it can be the same for you!

In LFS,

Luke Chang
